At UFC 79 tonight, Georges St.-Pierre dominated Matt Hughes from the start, punishing him for all of the first round and most of the second before Hughes finally tapped out. The win makes St.-Pierre the interim UFC welterweight title holder, and guarantees that he'll fight former champion Matt Serra, who had been scheduled to take on Hughes tonight until an injury canceled that fight. Serra has been guaranteed a title shot. After the fight, St.-Pierre took off his title belt and said, "The real champion is Matt Serra," and that he will only consider himself the real champ when and if he beats Serra.
The win is a bit of an embarrassment for Hughes, who was totally outclassed throughout and looked somewhat unprepared, even though Hughes is the one who had more time to prepare for the fight. But Hughes, who verbally tapped out in the second round when St.-Pierre got him in an arm bar, said it best afterward: "Georges is just the better fighter."

Hughes needs to hang em up! Great fighter at one time, but his days are over. He should demolish that midget Matt Serra than call it quits!

GSP "overblown"???
Uhhh, there's something called a weigh in.
Nice attempt to belittle GSP's complete domination, but anyone with any credibility in the sport will agree that GSP may be the most complete mixed martial arts athlete in the game today and perhaps in the history of MMA.
Serra will be lucky to last two rounds.

I have to say, I was shocked at the way it ended. One could say that it was kind of like a passing of the torch. Matt used the same arm bar to tap out GSP in the first fight. Now, the shoe is on the other foot.
As for the guy who talked about the steroids. Lets see what the athletic commision. These guys are drug tested here in the states. If GSP is doing that shit then he will get in trouble. But, a word of advice. Steroids have been all over the MMA world for years. I know a few high profile MMA guys that shall remain nameless (AND I DO MEAN HIGH PROFILE) that cycled on and off that shit before fights about four to eight weeks out. It's out there people you just have to know the games they play in doing it. For every one guys who is not doing it there are three that quitly are in some form. Injuries are one thing but, using to get ahead of the game is bull shit.
Oh, and so it's noted I don't think GSP is on that shit!!!

It seems that St. Pierre's loss to Sera taught him to train at staying focused. His fights since that loss - the defeat of Koschek and Hughes - revealed a fighter so utterly focused and determined, completely in the zone. Combined with his youth, his phenominal strength and athleticism, and his obvious martial arts skills he's been developing since childhood, he's become an unrelenting beast. At this point, it's clear that he's poised to totally dominate the UFC's welterweight division.

as i predicted matt hughes will be overwhelmed by gsp. what i did not expect was the submission. he made it so easy against a fighter who's well known for submitting his opponents. it seems that gsp has added superb ground fighting to his repertoire thereby making him a completely well rounded fighter. scary, very scary.

I'm a huge GSP fan living only 45min from Montreal on the US side of the border. I think GSP is all class. Hughes's stock value dropped for me after this past reality series, but there's no denying his record. I'm glad the GSP I hoped for showed up for this match as I do the next one against Matt S.

Here we go again with Serra GSP. Everyone talking s--t, oh GSp is gooing to knock him out, Serra only has a ground game, BLAH BLAH BLAH. Ok there is one thing everyone is forgetting, Serra knocked GSP the F---k out.Im gonna say it right now, against popular demand, SERRA will be victorious at the end of there next fight. There I said it. And by the way,to all the Matt hughes fans, hurry to the bookstore for his next book. Don't come to the Ghetto, if you aint from the Ghetto.

u know, I really respect GSP. He's a solid fighter and he has improved. It does seem funny for him to dominate Matt Hughes(my favorite fighter) the way he has for the last two fights, but it's time for Matt to hang it up. I would hate to see him fall from grace like another Shamrock. I think Frank Shamrock is taking a very nice and hungry approach to holding on to his domination though. Serra got a luck win versus GSP. I really don't think it will happen again. If GSP doesn't dominate that fight and all others, something is wrong and up.

MY HAT IS OFF TO A GREAT CHAMPION,MATT HUGHES. NOTHING IS FOREVER. WITHOUT GSP, MATT HUGHES IS STILL DOMINANT. GSP HAS YOUTH TO GO WITH GREAT SKILLS. I REALLY WANTED TO SEE HUGHES AND SERRA, AND I PICK HUGHES IN THAT FIGHT. I HEARD A LOT OF CAKEHOLE OR PIESAFE (TALK) DURING THE UFC CHALLANGE AND WOULD STILL LIKE TO SEE SERRA/HUGHES FIGHT. KUDOS FOR GSP TO SAY THAT SERRA IS STILL CHAMP.

GSP versus GSP...THE best submission progression evre seen in UFC history EVER. I include ALL Gracie fights and anyone else. Hip toss-north south head and arm triangle-front side kamura-arm bar-alma platta..five beautiful submission positions in quick fluid progression, absolutely wonderfull, I can't wait to see the GSP/Serra fight, I hope it's a ground fighting clinic put on by both fighters.

I think Matt Hushes total disrespect for GSP buy lauging when he lost to Matt Serra. That's not professional and you will never see GSP acting like such an ass hole. Who's lauging now Hughes. Matt Serra says he want to smash you in the face. I'd like to see that.
I think Matt Serra can beat Matt Hughes.
It seems Matt Hughes has lost his talent or he never had any, maybe he was just lucky.
What do you think?
