On Pardon the Interruption today, Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon compared Wladimir Klitschko to Kimbo Slice, and suffice to say, the PTI guys are not fans of Kimbo:
"The stuff that Kimbo Slice does, this mixed martial arts, I'm sorry, it looks like savagery to me," Kornheiser said.
To which Wilbon replied, "It is. It is savagery. ... It's so brutal, Tony, it is so savage, that when there's a knockout and somebody's on somebody pounding him and the refs have to come in, I can't watch it."
It's too bad that the PTI guys feel that way. I can live with it if prominent members of the sports media want to call Kimbo Slice's little corner of the MMA world "savagery." This is, after all, a guy who got famous beating people up in back alleys. But conflating Slice with the rest of MMA is silly, and MMA is no more savage a sport than boxing, which Kornheiser and Wilbon endorse.

Racism at its best. Why is it "savagery" when a Black fighter does it? Whatever the style. The objective of Mixed Martial Arts is to beat your opponent into submission by any means necessary and Kimbo is doing it with his fist. That's his style. The style of the streets. So what's wrong with it?

Racism? Oh play the race card right J? Did you even know that Michael Wilbon is black? MMA is not appealing to me at all. All they saying is they don't like it. Period. it's not racism they could've said uh chuck liddel or tito ortiz. Kimbo would get his ass knockout by Iron Mike Tyson. Remember a boxer never looses his punch.

Racism is the last thing that this issue has to deal with. They are just stating that they think that the sport of MMA is savage, which is fine. They are just uneducated in the sport and do not understand it. MMA is the fastest growing sport today and its for a reason people, because its exciting. This sport is something no one has ever seen before. At any moment someone can win the fight via ko, tapout, tko, however. You also cannot compare an old washed up boxer like Iron Mike Tyson to Kimbo Slice. I do remember Kimbo tapping out former heavyweight BOXING champion Ray Mercer in under a minute.

Race Card? Why does Kimbo Slice represent savagery and not all those white fighters? Why is he associated with savagery? Why couldn't they have just said that MMÃ… is savage period? Everything about MMA is savagery. To show a picture of Kimbo Slice while talking about savagery is racist.

There is no question BOXING IS MORE DANGEROUS THAN MMA....In the US alone, on average, two boxers die a year from injuries; studies show virtually all boxers, amateurs and pros, suffer brain damage; the problem is constant repeated blows to the head.
I'm 58 years old and still practice MMA. If you have proper technique and skills it is as safe as wrestling, Judo, or TKD. You would have to put a gun to my head to box exclusively..if you haven't gone to a gym and practiced MMA, you really can't appreciate the athleticism, skill, and all around talent that goes into this sport. Kornheiser makes his living primarily through boxing...what would you expect him to say.

I wouldn't call mma -- at least the kind that we have in the states -- any more savage than boxing-- theres rules, and alot of fighters win by submission and there isn't even any blood shed in those situations alot of times----- Klitschko boring? C'mon anyone who's seen Klitschko fight knows this was his worst performance as far as entertainment-- so cleary these guys' full impression of Klitschko was rested on watching only this fight, and the same thing with viewing MMA as savage. Watching 1 fight, can't tell you everything about a person or a sport.

Although I am late to this argument I have to say
I don't think Kornheiser's comments were intended to
be racist. And I don't think they were. I love both boxing and mma however alot of fighters in the mma
lose the art and functtion solely on street fighting
smarts. Sometimes it's good and most of the time it's not. Remember it is named "Mixed Martial Arts".
Arts being the operative word here.

OH Good God SAM, if you are going to talk about racism atleast learn how to spell it!! I love to see people complain and bitch about race and pull the almighty RACE CARD when 90% of the time after they type there post it looks and reads as if they have no more than an elementary school education. Is it not racist that they have all Black fund raising resources, Black Entertainment TV, NAACP and the list goes on and on. God Forbid we WHITE Americans have an ALL WHITE COLLEGE, a T.V. station called W.E.T.- this stands for "White Entertainment Television" for all you illiterate people that cant spell, and where is the National White Association that goes out and protects the White Race in this country?? To scream RACISM in itself is racist so put your RACE CARD up and start looking at the reality of things instead of just using an uneducated defense and yelling RACISM!!

LMAO!!! You do have W.E.T!! It's called ABC, NBC, FOX, CNN...shall I go on?!? In case you don't know your history people of colored needed organizations like the NAACP to try to gain ground on years of injustice and improper treatment. Funny how blacks are supposed to "Get over it", and Jews can still hold on to the tragedy they endured in Germany! Probably because white Americans didn't commit those crimes huh? It's still going on people...just not as blatant! Anyone remember Jena, Louisiana? How about Jasper, Texas?
