Join us at 1 p.m. Eastern Monday for a live chat in which we recap UFC 86, look ahead at what could be next for new light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin, and talk about anything else you want to discuss in the world of mixed martial arts.
For a fighter, knowing you are at the top of your weight class and are unmatched, i think you would have to move up. Otherwise you will turn into a Tim Silva.
close fight but rampage should have kept his belt sure he lost the 2 round an maybe the 5 but did you see how much rampage made forrest miss the only thing forrest had was the kicks rampage may walk with a lipe but forrest face said who really won
I don't know what fight commenter #1 saw, but I'd like some of what he was smokin.... The first round went to Rampage, but it was a close one....Rd 2 went convincingly to Forrest, Rd 3 a draw? to close to call, Rd 4 also to close to call but give it to Forrest for ring control and aggression. Rd 5 goes to Forrest who did more than enough to commandingly lead the round for the first 4 minutes and then coasted the last minute. 2 Solid rounds Forrest, 1 Solid round Jackson, and 2 rounds that could have swung either way. Apparently the judges saw it that way too.
I think this fight owes its outcome to 1 of 2 things:
* The Ultimate Fighter publicity: To have an underdog from their reality show fight against a brutal champ and overcome his power to win? That's Rocky in real life and UFC knows that! Drama sells people! In fact when it comes to making money in front of a TV camera, be it sports or reality TV, drama trumps talent.
* The Race Issue: A lot of people don't like to think about this but this is an unfortunate truth: White people, even ones who are generally non-racist, love to see the white guy win. This isn't a 'white' thing, because black guys like to see the black guy win too! Eminem says there are talented black rappers who sell half the records he does, because on top of being a very talented rapper white kids "connected with me too because I looked like them." The majority of the UFC's audience is white, a white champion is more marketable, and so they ruled in the best interest of not either fighter, but the BUSINESS.
