UFC had a press conference in downtown Chicago on Monday to promote the upcoming UFC 90 event, and outside the press conference about 100 fans congregated and craned their necks to catch a glimpse of the fighters. There was one moment when those fans made an audible "ooh" sound at something said in the press conference, and that moment was when UFC President Dana White said of middleweight champion Anderson Silva, "He could meet Georges St. Pierre at a catch weight."
Silva and St. Pierre are, in my opinion, the UFC's two best pound-for-pound fighters, so it's not surprising that the fans would love the idea of seeing them in the Octagon together. I've said I'd like to see them fight at 180 pounds.
But I no longer feel that way, both because I don't think St. Pierre has what it takes to beat Silva, who is the best fighter alive, and because I don't think it would be safe for the already lean and lanky Silva to fight below the middleweight limit of 185 pounds.
Silva said through his translator that he walks around at more than 205 and liked fighting at 205 last month, but right now all his focus is on fighting Patrick Cote at 185 pounds. For his part, White said of Silva, "This guy wants to challenge himself. ... He'd probably fight at 145 pounds if we asked him to."
I'm sure he'd try, but I think St. Pierre's best potential fight is with current lightweight champ B.J. Penn, and Silva's best potential fights are in the other weight direction. Silva vs. St. Pierre is a fun idea that isn't going to happen.

first off i think st. pierre would beat anderson silva because their making silva to be the best fighter but he really hasnt fought any real tough opponents other than rich franklin and dan henderson who wasnt really fighting his best when he fought silva i mean no doubt silva is a great fighter but the best? no he is not. everyone got all wet when silva beat james irvin at 205 but james irvin is a nobody who could never compete with silvas skill. so silva needs to beat more opponents with more credibility, not just beat up on a bunch of no bodys and claim hes the best he needs to prove it by fighting tougher opponents. georges st. pierre has fought really tough opponents and i believe that he will beat penn when they meet the new years eve show, and i know for a fact that georges st. pierre would beat anderson silva anyday because he is a more accomplished fighter. GSP RULES!!!!

OMG! You took the words out of my mouth and the thoughts out of my head. Silva is a good fighter but you are absolutely correct in that he hasnt really fought anyone of true calibur! Give him a real fight and lets see what happens! GSP rules and as far as Im concerned is the best fighter hands down. He proves it time and time again!

I noticed all of u who said silva hasnt fought any fighters of good caliber, but did not name any fighter who he couldnt beat at 205 and under. Sounds like a bunch of haters to me. Sure Fedor is good but lets not act like silva is not on the same level as him. Ithink u coulnd go wrong by sayin either one of them is the best fighter. Oh, and by the way, GSP got knocked out by who? I think he lost to a guy that shonnie carter knoced out.

Fedor's most challenging opponent of the past several year's has been Tim Sylvia...Tim Sylvia would of needed a miracle to compete. Until Fedor fights a legitimate heavyweight fighter who could test his abilities like back in PRIDE he can't be looked at as best pound for pound. GSP is running through the welterweight division now because of his focus, but before he can say he cleaned out that division and began to look for a superfight with Silva, he needs to beat BJ decisively this time around and deal with the winner of the Thiago Alves Diego Sanchez fight, both of which seem completely refocused and are flying beneath the radar. Anderson is the best pound for pound right now because he's got nasty skills in all areas and his skills continuously improve. However Anderson needs to remain focused and continue taking all opposition seriously because if he gets complacent as he has in the past, it will result in the same outcome, a loss. He needs to continue destroying opponents.

A Fighter's Greatness is not only about his physical abilities but his mental abilities, and GPS and Silva are both at the highest level on both scales. What makes this a great showdown is that "They Both Believe in Their Minds and Hearts that They are The Best" Give the fans the war we deserve.
