UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva defeated No. 1 contender Patrick Cote in a bizarre third-round stoppage at UFC 90 tonight in Chicago. The first round was fairly close, with Silva doing a little damage with a knee to Cote's head. In the second, they went to the ground briefly, and although Silva did a little more damage, Cote fought well and became the first person in the UFC to last two full rounds with Silva. It was shaping up to be a good, close fight.
But early in the third, Cote suddenly hurt his knee and it was over. It's hard to tell what happened to Cote's knee, and whether the injury was caused by Silva's leg kicks or was just a freak occurrence, but Cote couldn't go on, and that was that.
The Brazilian Silva apologized to the fans afterward for the strange ending. He still improves his record to 23-4, including 8-0 in the UFC, and he'll keep his reputation as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the world, even if it wasn't his most impressive performance.
The French Canadian Cote, who was booed by the fans, also apologized, but he did say "I think I did a great job ... my knee just popped out. I'm sorry." Cote falls to 13-5 and 4-5 in the UFC.

Silva should fight Bisping for his 185 lb belt, and then just move up to 205 and stay there. He would be better tested at 205 by some of the top guys. No one can touch him at 185, including Bisping!!!

Cote sucks. UFC made a terrible decision putting him in the ring. Silva really did not need this, the upsetting of fans is a sensitive thing Silva has been trying to get past.
Im so pissed at Cote right now lol.

??? Who else in UFC has taken Silva to 3 rounds? Franklin crumpled like a beer can when he got kneed to the head, Cote took a flying knee and kept stalking Silva, who by the way, did the most back pedaling I've ever seen from him. He obviously respected Cote's ability, maybe an out of shape video gamer like you should do the same.

Thank goodness I skipped the $54.95 fight. Thanks Dana! The UFC has finally raised the price so high I can lay off the mid rank so-so fights like I knew this would be. Come on UFC, who do you think you are.....Pro Boxing?

I understand it was not UFC's fault for the fight ending in such a way. However, we all know that EVERYONE paid their hard earned money only to watch Silva. We should get a partial credit, or a discount on our next UFC purchase. I am not upset at UFC, yet, but will be if this does not occur.
I remember Tyson's first fight, I believe, out of prison. it ended in the first round with a through in towel, and we were reimbursed the money paid / wasted.
I think Anderson Silva went in with a game plan, and I do not think we saw the full effects of what he trained so hard to do. While i do give Cote credit for lasting 2 + rounds, what did he accomplish?

The card was solid on paper but Silva was literally toying around with Cote. The only shot Cote had was if he pulled a "Serra" and hit SIlva with a crazy haymaker.
We need to see Thiago Silva fight more. He destroyed Koscheck and Matt Huges.

This card was actually pretty crappy. What a waste of money. The best fight was Griffin vs Sherk ... that fight was one of the best of the year ... The Koscheck Alves fight was pretty exciting but never really materialized into much. Werdum got knocked out in like 10 seconds. The card was good on paper but the styles didn't hold up in that one.
Silva was just toying with Cote. You coudl tell he just wanted to give the fans a good fight. He really could have hurt Cote at any point in that fight and was just show boating. The guy (silva) is really a physical specimen and is a sight to behold. He really is hands down the best fighter in MMA. He is built like a maniac with his legs being so long. I am hoping that the UFc 94 super bowl card includes Silva.
Here are my hopes for that card ...
Penn vs St.Pierre (scheduled)
Silva vs Bisping
Sherk vs Florian/Stevenson winner
Machida vs Alves
Shogun vs Jardine
Something crazy like that ... Looks to me that the best UFC card is the evans vs griffin, rampage vs silva & mir vs nougeria

Maybe we can see a rematch of Fitch vs Alves instead of Machida. I hate watching Machida fight ... The guy is boring

Machida vs. Alves ... what are you talking about? They are 2 divisions apart!
Bisping? He isn't even top 20 in the world. As much as he ran against Leben, he is going to look like Carl Lewis at a track meet against Silva!

You have no idea what you're talking about.
Whoever wins the Franklin/Henderson fight at UFC 93 is the next coach on TUF 9. Bisping is the other coach. Therefore, Bisping's next fight will be either Franklin or Henderson. I believe that's been announced about 500 times.
Shogun is fighting Mark Coleman at UFC 93 on 1/17. So basically you're saying he should fight Coleman, and then fight Jardine 2 weeks later at UFC 94.
Machida would never fight Thiago Alves. People who get Thiago Alves and Thiago Silva mixed up are idiots. Believe it or not, there's more than one Brazilian named Thiago.
Learn the logistics of matchmaking. Thank you.

The previous comment was directed towards PSN: johnnynumber5 who has shit for brains.
I'm thinking about taking all of the dumb comments he's posted on this page so far and analyzing them in my blog.
For example:
"Maybe we can see a rematch of Fitch vs Alves instead of Machida. I hate watching Machida fight ... The guy is boring"
What a retard.

WTF? I am going to patiently not be upset with UFC. It is not UFC's fault that this occured. However, it is not my fault I paid for a fight which ended in such a way. I would only expect UFC to either at least give us fans a partial refund / credit, or discount us on the next UFC event we chose to purchase.
I am an avid Anderson Silva fan, and just like many of you out there, I only paid money / wasted US currency on this event. i am dissappoainted, but recognize that things do occur. But UFC, please be as humble as Silva, and help us fans out. otherwise I will not order the next fight, even though I really really really want to. What if this happens again? it probably won't. but what if it does? UFC, reassure your fan base!
Anderson Silva won, and that's that. I don't like it either, but it's the way it is. i think Anderson Silva had a strategy coming in, and that strategy was going to take a few rounds to display. Either way, Cote did virtually nothing to Silva who remains the best pound for pound fighter of his era, not just his weight class!
