Aleksander Emelianenko, the heavyweight MMA fighter who is best known as the younger brother of Fedor Emelianenko, defeated Sang Soo Lee with a first-round knockout yesterday at the M-1 Challenge event in St. Petersburg, Russia. Here's the video:
Emelianenko threw a combination that floored Lee, and the referee quickly stepped in to stop the fight. But while Emelianenko showed that he can still fight, questions remain about his future in MMA.
Most significantly, we still don't know why Emelianenko was scratched at the last minute from the Affliction card in July, and whether he'll ever be cleared to fight in the United States again. If he is, he could be a good addition to the next Affliction show, in January, when Fedor is fighting Andrei Arlovski in the main event. But if Aleksander can't be cleared to fight in the U.S., you have to wonder why M-1 is letting him fight anywhere.

Since he has been allowed to fight in M-1, I guess we can assume that the "Hepatitis B" rumor was just that ... a rumor. Aleksander claimed from the start that he was simply late to get into the US and he didn't meet the deadline to get his medicals done.
Aleksander is an incredible stand-up fighter. The only stand-up fight Aleksander ever lost was to a prime Cro-cop in only his 4th MMA fight. His ground game and mental focus don't seem to be on the level of his brother, but he is still young and has time to hone his skills if he chooses to dedicate himself.
