When I talked to Ultimate Fighter coach Frank Mir this week about the aspiring UFC fighters he coached on the show, it was clear that the fighter who impressed him the most was Vinny Magalhaes.Mir raves about Vinny's jiu jitsu and views Vinny as a strong favorite to beat Ryan Bader Saturday night and win the six-figure UFC contract.
"Bader's a very strong wrestler, but he didn't have much ground skills," Mir said. "Vinny's such a high-level jiu jitsu guy, if he takes him down it's trouble. When you go to the ground with Vinny, you're done. Bader's only chance of winning the fight is to stay away from him and hope to land a big shot. I think Bader's a great fighter and has a lot of potential but I think it's hard to see how he can beat Vinny."
I mentioned to Mir that UFC President Dana White referred to Vinny's stand-up game as "boring," but Mir said he disagreed with that.
"Vinny's been training at Xtreme Couture, and I've worked with him, and I think his stand-up has improved a lot," Mir said. "I think his stand-up is good. He throws a hard roundhouse. Vinny kicks hard. He's a powerful guy. Now, was he tentative with his hands? Yeah, but he's learned so well, his boxing has improved drastically."
And, of course, there's that jiu jitsu.
"He's the best jiu jitsu competitor in the light heavyweight division -- right now -- in the UFC," Mir said. "He's powerful, flexible, able to do things that no one else can do."
I asked Mir about the heated exchange on The Ultimate Fighter between Vinny and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira regarding whether Vinny is more accomplished in jiu jitsu than Nogueira.
"All Vinny was saying is he's more decorated in the jiu jitsu world -- the sport jiu jitsu world -- than Nogueira," Mir said. "And guess what? He is. That statement is true. He's a more accomplished jiu jitsu competitor than Nogueira."
"Every attribute, if you wanted to make up a perfect jiu jitsu guy, Vinny has," Mir added. "Working with Vinny has made me a lot better at jiu jitsu. If Bader ends up on his ass, it'll be over in 15 seconds."

If you ask me, the skill level of the guys on TUF seems to get lower and lower each season. Nover is the only fighter that has impressed me, and with the low level of competition he is facing it's hard to really know how good he is ...
I doubt that Vinny's standup has improved much since TUF. He is likely still a one dimensional fighter. Krzysztof is a solid fighter (nothing special) and he would have had that fight in the bag, but he chose to go to the ground (no idea why). Vinny couldn't get him to the ground or land any effective shots. Krzysztof took the fight to the only place where Vinny could win.
I would suspect Bader to use his wrestling in reverse to keep the fight standing, and I expect him to win a boring unanimous decision. I doubt Vinny will get the sub.

I would very easily bet on Vinny to sub Bader in seconds once it hits the ground and no amount of wrestling Bader has is going to keep that from happening. Vinny is too strong in that area and hes big enough and strong enough to take Bader to the ground eventually. His kicks are really strong and Bader will get worn before Vinny will as well. Bader's downfall will be when he hits the mat, and he will without a doubt hit the mat.
I don't know how you could possibly say that Vinny hasn't impressed, maybe that is because he has made his fights look like hes fighting a child in comparison. There is no competition for his skills in TUF though it will be interesting to see what happens when he does enter the rest of the UFC (as the guy winning the contract) and has more stiff competition.
The level of fighting is only going to get better as these guys find camps to improve what they are lacking. Forrest Griffin is perfect example as a brawler with heart winning TUF, and now improving to a very good all around fighter only getting better with time and training.

Re-watch the fight. Vinny pulls him into his guard...its not that he just gets the position given too him.

Vinny isn't a good MMA fighter ... he is a good jui-jitsu guy. His stand-up is poor and he is a very timid striker.
Darryl - You used the word "skills" when referring to Vinny. In my opinion he only has one skill. The light-heavyweight division was terribly weak this season. As I said, I'm not impressed.

True, the skills have decreased in TUF, most fights didn't go to decision, which makes it much more entertaining, but the skills are definitely lacking. We could see guys like Polakowski, Kingsbury, and Bruchez with no ground skills whatsoever. Don't understimate Vinny's striking, in his preliminary fight against Rashad's brother he broke his ribs. He has solid kicks and I dont think a respected fighter like Frank Mir would lie saying that he had improved his boxing. Krzysztof didn't take the fight to the ground, Vinny pulled guard in both clinches during the fight, which i believe he'll do again against Bader, and don't even compare Elliot Marshall to Vinny.

Your wrong about Krzysztof ... Vinny was down & he went into guard. He had a chance to stand up, just like earlier in the fight when he backed away.
