Could Georges St. Pierre Fight B.J. Penn, Thiago Alves and Anderson Silva in 2009?

In this video, Georges St. Pierre discusses his plans for fighting B.J. Penn at UFC 94, and for a couple of potential fights after that:

The UFC has already announced that the St. Pierre-Penn winner will defend the welterweight title against Thiago Alves, and St. Pierre knows that if he beats Penn, Alves will be a tough test. But he also doesn't hesitate to talk about a potential future fight with Anderson Silva at 185 pounds.

"Thiago Alves is doing very well, and by the time I fight Thiago Alves, maybe somebody else will come up," St. Pierre said. "My division is pretty stacked (but) I don't want to say never. I will always fight who the fans want me to fight. My sport is controlled by, of course, the UFC, but who controls UFC? The fans. If the fans are wanting to see (a St. Pierre-Silva fight) happen, it will happen."

I think it's safe to say that the fans want to see that fight. And if St. Pierre beats both Penn and Alves, I'm not sure that there's a lot left for him to do at welterweight. I suppose if former EliteXC welterweight champion Jake Shields were to sign with the UFC and beat a Top 5 welterweight, he might be worthy of a title shot against GSP, but that's supposing a lot.

If St. Pierre wins his next two fights, and Silva wins his next fight (most likely against Thales Leites at UFC 97 in Montreal), it would be the right time for St. Pierre vs. Silva. When two champions have cleared out their weight classes, it just makes sense to pit them against each other.

That means we could be heading into a 2009 in which St. Pierre will fight Penn, Alves and Silva. I can't think of a better trio of opponents for him. But first he has to beat Penn.
