Stephan Bonnar has a career record that pretty well tells you where he falls in the MMA light heavyweight rankings: He has 11 wins, but only one against a particularly noteworthy opponent, Keith Jardine. And he has four losses, against arguably the three best light heavyweights in the world: Rashad Evans, Lyoto Machida and Forrest Griffin (twice).
But Bonnar's opponent Saturday night at UFC 94, Jon Jones, has a record that doesn't tell you much about him at all: He's 7-0, but the vast majority of MMA fans wouldn't be able to recognize a single guy he's fought.
So does that mean Jones is a rising star in the sport, or does it mean he's accustomed to beating up on cupcakes and will fall to a superior fighter like Bonnar?
"He's pretty much the same as any other opponent," Bonnar said of Jones. "I saw a couple of his earlier fights that weren't too competitive, he dominated. But his last fight went the distance, and I'm sure he's improved since then. He knows this is his biggest shot. I know he's going to come ready and look to bring it, and I'll be ready for that."
Bonnar is listed as a slight favorite to beat Jones. I think that as long as Bonnar is finally healthy, he's going to win.
Bonnar has neverbeen a great fighter but has had some great fights. He's just a steppin stone for up and comin fighter. Its the only way hecan still compete in the UFC.
