UFC President Dana White and fighters Forrest Griffin and Kenny Florian appeared on today's Dr. Phil to tell teenagers that getting into street fights is not the way to become a professional MMA fighter. Good to know.
Griffin and Florian (whom Dr. Phil referred to as "Kenny Florini") didn't have much time to say anything, but White made an impassioned plea to all the youngsters out there: Street fighting is bad, mmkay?
"Here's the reality: What we do in the Octagon, the UFC, is sanctioned by the athletic commissions," White said. "It happens all the time in street fights, people get killed. ... Fighting in the street is not the way to get into the UFC. We do not condone street fighting and we're not looking for any guys that are coming off the streets."
I can't say I'm a Dr. Phil fan, but I do give him credit for this segment. It would be easy for a guy in his position to decry MMA as sheer brutality, but he presented it as a legitimate sport and a good alternative for young people. Kudos to you, Dr. Phil.
Aye, agreed. Normally Phil is a flaming mook, but he gets props for trying to show the kids that there is a proper outlet available for what they do, and thats MMA, which is refreshing from the "human cockfighting" angle usually portrayed.
Wish Forrest, Kenny, or Dana wouldve suggested to them to perhaps join a gym, or a dojo, a learning center where they can legitimately train and hone said craft.
