Rich Franklin earned one of the most significant wins of his MMA career Saturday, beating Wanderlei Silva in a hard-fought decision in the main event at UFC 99.
The fight was a three-round battle in which Franklin took the upper hand early and was able to hold on late. Franklin landed several hard strikes to Silva's face in the first round, and after the first he could be heard telling his corner, "I think I broke his nose."
In the second round Franklin continued to pour it on, and he looked like he should have an easy time winning the fight. But in the third round Silva started to look like the Silva of old, attacking Franklin with his typical hard-charging approach. But that wasn't enough to finish the fight, and Franklin won on all three judges' cards.
Despite the loss, Silva said afterward that he felt good and that he was happy to have been a part of the first UFC event in Germany.
"I'm feeling very well, and this event was amazing," Silva said. "This is the best event in the world."
Franklin improved his professional MMA record to 25-4. Silva falls to 32-10-1.
In the co-main event, heavyweight Cain Velasquez, an undefeated former Arizona State wrestler, had by far the biggest win of his MMA career in defeating Cheick Kongo by unanimous decision. Velasquez absorbed some very hard punches from Kongo and overpowered him on the ground, improving to 6-0.
Mirko Cro Cop also returned to the Octagon Saturday, beating Mostapha Al-Turk by first-round TKO. Cro Cop looked strong, but his victory was somewhat tainted by an accidental poke to Al-Turk's eye that the referee didn't see.

At least now I know that I should save my money and not spend $40 or $50 dollars. But i agree way to many decisions.

I thought you agreed before to put all of the results after the jump to not spoil it for those of us who hadn't watched it already. I had to work today and I'm tuning into the damn PPV now. I did everything not to spoil it for myself all day and I come here only to have you put the results in the header!!
Please, for all future fights put the results after the jump. I would greatly appreciate it from now on.

If I had the money to watch ppv I would have put it on Velasquez to win. I don't care about the other fighters only time will tell if they can justify those wins by decision. UFC is getting to be like boxing too many fights are going to decisions and are just plain boring the hell out me.

I'm so happy that Rich won. He's my favorite fighter and if he would've lost this fight then I would have to say he needs to retire, but since he didn't he can continue on with his MMA career.

i don't think this card was too bad. i like it when it is an all out war between fighters. wandy didn't look right the whole time, but that may be just me. but i liked this fight. it showed that even though they were both tired they were willing to keep fighting. big shots after big shots, they probably both felt like whoever loses will be fired. so it will be interesting to see if wandy is forced out of the UFC. it just may be that he has been in too many brutal wars during his career. and it is showing now, the more fights he gets into this goes for Matt Hughes as well. but we will see i hope i am wrong.

Way too many decisions. So many fights had -"fighter has most wins by KO" and they all went decision.
Only fight worth watching was the Wanderlei one, his are always good. The Cain fight was exactly what everyone knew was going to happen

i don't know. that cain fight took everyone by surprise. i would say a high percentage of ppl picked kongo to win (myself included). but everyone said that his takedown defense was improved which proved to be wrong as hell. never in my life have i seen someone get taken down and struggle to give up his back. wow.

Last night's card wasn't that bad but it wasn't that great either imo. I was very surprised there were so many decisions (though not as bad as UFC 94). This fight included, though it was very good. I have to agree that Wanderlai Silva can't compete with the elite anymore (though he gave Rich Franklin a very tough fight). I wonder what will become of Silva.

I agree with kwilbur. Kongo looked awful that night. One could argue about him taking the fight on short notice, but one thing is for sure, after that performance he won't be able to handle Brock Lesnar's wrestling skills or anyone with a good ground game for that matter.

There are arguments out there, on many mma blogs, that Silva won the fight. I thought 1st went to Franklin, 2nd was a pickem round, 3rd was Silva. I don't agree with Silva being done. Rich Franklin is the 2nd or 3rd best 185 in the world & Silva cut 12 Pounds the morning of the weigh in. No gas left for rounds 2 or 3 but he's got balls to get him through, where I don't think Franklin has that as much as Silva & I'm a Franklin fan.
