Video: Ray Mercer KOs Tim Sylvia

Former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia lasted all of 10 seconds in the cage with former WBO heavyweight champion Ray Mercer Saturday night in a fight that matched up an out-of-shape former MMA star with an over-the-hill former boxing star.

The Sylvia vs. Mercer fight was widely regarded as a bad idea from the outset. At first, it was going to be a boxing match in New Jersey, but the state athletic commission said it wouldn't sanction the fight. Then the fight was moved to Alabama, which has no commission -- but the promoters were warned that an unsanctioned boxing match was illegal, so they turned the bout into a mixed martial arts fight instead.

But whatever the rules, it didn't matter. Sylvia showed up grossly overweight, and as soon as Mercer landed one punch, that was that. Mercer deserves some credit for still having punching power at age 48, but this wasn't a fight that makes Mercer look good so much as it was a fight that makes Sylvia look bad.

Well,I stand corrected.I said with Mercer being so old and Tim being Tim this would be a really boring fight.I was wrong although that is probably the only way it wasnt a snoozer.

I felt bad for Mercer before this fight but he still has it while this makes Sylvia look awful. Don't EVER underestimate your opponent.

It was only Tim's last fight Fedor beat him in like 30 seconds and that made Fedor look amazing because Tim was the former champ and is a tough opponent but now that Mercer who has the lose to Kimbo beat Tim quicker than Fedor is because Tim is to old and fat and not what he used to be

That's a fair point, Kevin: I think Fedor is the best in the world, but I agree with you that his quick victories over Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski look less impressive now that we've seen Ray Mercer and Brett Rogers have even quicker victories over Sylvia and Arlovski.

I'm glad the person that finally solidified all my doubts and hating of Tim Sylvia was . . . Tim Sylvia. This whole fight was a joke to begin with, and seeing him flop over like a limp whale made it that much more embarrassing. Here's to hoping we never see Tim Sylvia fight again!

Ive always hated Tim Sylvia and he just disgraced the MMA world again. He should seriously disappear for a while, actually I take that back forever. This man is washed up, overweight, and old. Never come back to mixed martial arts Tim.

And, no, get in the cage with a professional MMA fighter and you'll get your ass wooped. There are levels, just like there are levels in Boxing. And there are no headbutts, so please get your facts straight.

And, also, MMA has already surpassed Boxing, lol . . ratings don't lie. But hey, you're the ultra-cool retro Boxer lover that knows everything. So I must be wrong . . .
