UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida has an opponent for his first title defense: Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. UFC President Dana White confirmed during the Ultimate Fighter Finale that Machida will take on Shogun in the fall.
The Machida vs. Shogun fight had not been officially announced until now, but it was widely speculated that the fight would happen. It's a fight that makes a lot of sense for the UFC, as Shogun is one of the best light heavyweights in the world and has an aggressive style that should push the pace against the elusive Machida.
After Machida beat Rashad Evans at UFC 98, I wrote that I think Shogun has the best chance of beating Machida of all the UFC's light heavyweights. He's a dynamic striker who's quick enough to move in and out against Machida, and although he only has one career win by submission, he can win a fight on the ground if he needs to. Shogun-Machida is a great fight.
It's also a fight that serves as a major comeback for Shogun, who not long ago looked like his career had gone into a decline. After being one of the best fighters in the Japanese Pride promotion, Rua lost to Forrest Griffin late in 2007 and missed all of 2008 with an injury. Now he's set for a big-time UFC title fight, on October 24 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Jon Jones would beat both of these guys. He will be the star of the future. Remember how he handled Stefan Bonner.

Machida will kick Jon Jones ass! However, one fight at a time. Get back to me when they actually fight; that is if Jones is still around.

I do beleive Jones will someday be a contender and maybe even champ. However, this is not his time; it's Machida time. Machida will be retired when Jones is ready for the championship fight.

Rua is a class act! I am a big Machida fan but admit this is a dangerous fight for both the champ and challenger.

We'll just have to see if Shogun can close the distance which seems vital in beating Machida. When you give him distance and essentially get into a karate striking/kick boxing match he is going to be difficult to defeat because of the reach advantage and awkward timing. If you go back and watch the Bj Penn fight and even the Tito Ortiz fight you will see how to have success against Machida. It doesn't mean you will beat the guy but it's a better game plan than Evans had which felt short sided. You have to close the distance and get on the inside of Machida. The thing is that the cage assists Machida when compared to a traditional square ring because of the extra space to operate.
The only losses in the career of Shogun have been to some pretty great opponents in Griffin, Coleman and Babalu Sobral. All of those fighters were pretty much in their primes at the time as well. When you look at who he has beaten it's really a who's who of MMA - Rampage, Gono, Nogueira, Santos, Arona, Overeem (2x), Diabate, Randleman, Nakamura, Coleman and Liddell to name the biggest names.
What I'm getting at here is that Rua has what it takes to beat Machida and Machida has what it takes to beat Rua. The only thing I have to question about Shogun is his conditioning and if he can go into those 4th & 5th championship rounds. He got gassed in the Griffin and Coleman fights and the Liddell fight was so quick we never got a chance to see where his conditioning was coming off the Coleman fight where he wasn't impressive at all in a maligned victory.
This is the type of fight we need to see from Machida. I want to see him (like Anderson Silva) fight guys who are going to push the action against him so that the fight is worth watching. Personally, this fight is pretty much even money in my book IF Shogun is back. Remember that a champ isn't a champ until he defends his title (I think you said that about Evans). I kind of expect Machida to win this fight but I wouldn't be all that surprised if he happened to lose.

Hahaha . . let's compare Stephan Bonner to Lyoto Machida . . . there really isn't one. I like Stephan, but he's nowhere near Machida's caliber. The guy's a magician out there. Jon Jones will slowly rise much like Jon Fitch did and he will have his time. For now it's the Machida/Evans/Rua/Rampage/Griffin era.

Forrest Griffin ain't top 5 material. He's just not that good. I don't think he's ever gonna be champ again.

i like that reply imshortyk. but jon fitch faded so fast, but that wasn't his fault. but anyways, jones will be good. but i do give him a shorter time frame. next year or year after that is when he will start to fight the big names.
anyways back to the original topic. this is every MMA Fan's dream matchup either this or Anderson vs Machida, but anyways. I am glad that Rampage didn't take this fight, this Shogun fight should be a better one anyways, because the match up is soo much better, aggressor vs counter. I cannot wait till October.

Not only that but if SHogun beats Machida and Rampage beats Evans it sets up the ultimate grudge match from back in the pride days when Rampage got destroyed by Shogun. It was total beat down and Rampage has been on record as saying thats the other loss he wants to avenge from Pride with the other being his destruction of Wanderlei Silva.
It's a couple of IF's but it could happen and would be a huge mega UFC PPV main event.

This is a bad fight for Shogun, he has too much to loose. They should have put him in with Jon Jones first, the the winner take on Machida.

Jones isn't at that headline level yet and Machida is just starting to get there in North America. A Jon Jones vs Machida fight wouldn't be big enough to the casual fan to be a big main event PPV draw. All of the other big Light Heavyweights except Shogun already had fights booked as well. I'm not sure when Jones is scheduled to fight next but he needs to string together a few more wins against big name opponents before earning a title shot.
I believe the rumor is that the winner of Henderson and Bisping gets the next middleweight title shot against Silva but I think the Belfort rumor is plausible and it's possible the Henderson/Bisping winner might get a shot at Machida if they want it. Things will become more clear as the next few months of fights wrap up and we know who gets the next title shot.

Alistair Azimuth, I agree with most of what you've written so far but I'd like to talk quickly about Shogun's three losses and his win over Coleman.
Shogun lost to Babalu as you stated when Babalu was in his prime and Shogun was only 20 or 21 years old. I recommend looking up that fight and watching it as it was a very hotly contested fight and truly showed the huge potential of Shogun. His next loss was to Mark Coleman as he was taken down he suffered a freak injury where his elbow dislocated when he broke his fall. His third loss came at the hands of Forrest Griffin as we all know and came with 9 seconds left in the fight. What you probably know but a lot of others are not aware of is that Shogun came into that fight with his knee injured and couldn't train for cardio for over one month at that time. Credit his courage, and confidence in his ability, or call him stupid he made no excuses, fought, gassed and had to tap.
In that fight he obvioulsy made the initial injury much worse and needed surgery, after rehab he injured his other knee and needed surgery. When he had his rematch with Coleman it was his first fight after two major surgeries in one year, absolutely no time to regain cardio there.
I believe that barring any unfortuante injury we will see the old Shogun back as I expect his cardio to be just fine. I think Shogun is going to show the world why he was the number 1 LHW fighter in the world, and at age 27 he will be around a very long time.

That's why they fight! There is always the aspect of the unknown. I think Machida being skilled in striking, kicking, submissions and his ability in avoiding attacks give him the edge. I would not be suprised to see Machida attack with strong roundhouses to Rua's legs and body. I think Machida will be more agressive then most fans expect. However, when they step into the cage it's 50/50. And yes I have been quated as saying "you are not the champ until you defend the title with a win." I'll stick by that comment win or lose. No excuses; peace!

Rua, as talented as he is, has yet to prove title shot -worthy since joining the UFC. He lost to Griffin, and has beaten Coleman and Liddell, 2 opponents in today's times that are well passed there prime.
I do believe Machida/Rua will be an exceptional fight. It's just his quality of opponents thus far in the Octagon don't make him title shot-worthy.
