UFC 100 is, quite simply, the biggest event in the history of mixed martial arts. We've got all the details and predictions for the televised fights below.
What: UFC 100
When: The undercard starts at 7 PM ET Saturday and the televised card begins at 10.
Where: Mandalay Bay Events Center, Las Vegas
How: You can buy it for $44.95 on UFC.com or pay-per-view ($54.95 in HD), or you can just follow along with our live coverage here at FanHouse.
Predictions on the five televised fights:
Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir
I've gone back and forth on the main event, and I still can't decide how I think it's going to turn out. On their feet, Lesnar has a long reach and devastating punching power, while Mir uses kicks effectively in the stand-up game. On the ground, Mir's jiu jitsu is outstanding, while Lesnar was an NCAA heavyweight champion wrestler. I could see this fight ending any number of ways, and I might change my mind between now and Saturday night, but right now I'm betting on a back-and-forth fight that goes the distance, with Mir winning three rounds to Lesnar's two.
Predicted winner: Mir
Georges St. Pierre vs. Thiago Alves
As great a main event as Mir vs. Lesnar is, I think this welterweight title fight has to be considered the favorite for the Fight of the Night award. St. Pierre is arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, but Alves, who's a little bigger and stronger than St. Pierre and has devastating kicks and knees, might be his most dangerous opponent yet. I expect St. Pierre to do his best to keep the fight on the ground, and that's where he'll win it.
Predicted winner: St. Pierre
Dan Henderson vs. Michael Bisping
The battle of the two Ultimate Fighter coaches is Bisping's chance to earn a shot at the middleweight title, but for all Bisping has accomplished in the UFC, I just don't think he's in Henderon's class. I think Henderson is better both on his feet and on the ground and I look for him to finish Bisping in the second round.
Predicted winner: Henderson
Jon Fitch vs. Paulo Thiago
Here's something fascinating about this fight: Hardly anyone knows who Thiago is, and yet if he beats Fitch, he'd have a very strong case for being the No. 1 welterweight contender and the next challenger to the St. Pierre-Alves winner. Thiago, after all, has won all 11 of his pro fights, has dominated most of his opponents, and is coming off a first-round TKO win over Josh Koscheck. If he beats Fitch, it'll be two straight wins over consensus Top 10 welterweights. I don't think he's going to get that win, though, as I think Fitch is just too good an all-around fighter and will find some weaknesses in Thiago's stand-up game.
Predicted winner: Fitch
Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Alan Belcher
Although most fans I know wish the Mark Coleman vs. Stephan Bonnar fight was on the pay-per-view show instead of this one, this is an incredibly important fight for the UFC because it's the debut of Akiyama, a very popular fighter in Japan and South Korea. Belcher is a dangerous opponent for him, but I think Akiyama will use his world-class judo to take Belcher down and pound him out.
Predicted winner: Akiyama

The thing about Mir vs. Lesnar is there's only one area where you can really say one guy has a huge advantage over the other, and that's Mir's jiu jitsu against Lesnar's. There is no chance at all of Lesnar submitting Mir, and not having to worry about getting submitted has to give Mir a huge tactical advantage. Lesnar, meanwhile, constantly has to be worrying about making a mistake that will open himself up to Mir catching him.

Mike, are you suggesting that Lesnar does NOT have a stand-up striking advantage over Mir?
This is probably the one fight I would not be willing to bet. I agree that Mir should have the better ground game, but someone who hits as hard as Lesnar can has a chance.
It will be very interesting to see how both of these fighters have evolved over the past several months. More so Lesnar, since his MMA is relatively raw.
For what it's worth, I'm on board with MDS's predictions:
Mir by submission (I can't imagine this going 5 rounds, either way)
St. Pierre (my brain says GSP, though I'm rooting for Alves)
Henderson - and I don't think this one is even close
Fitch finds a way
Akiyama
I'm looking forward to this card!

I will be in vegas I cannot wait. Leaving friday morning.
Mister MDS do you plan on being at the fan expo on saturday? I hope to run into you
My picks
Frank Mir
GSP
Hendo
Fitch
Akiyama
Do not count me in those who would prefer to see an over the hill coleman against an overhypped Dana White buddy Stephan Bonnar
Akiyama as one of the most interesting stories out there in MMA.
I wrote a piece on my blog today about him that I am quite proud of. Here is the translation from google

I have been waiting with anticipation for Akiyama's debut

Very nice site Fredrick; couldn't tell you there - I'm still working on my first language, and didn't make my way to completing a post. Loved the Bisping vid, classic.

As much as I like Mir as a very, very good technical fighter. Lesner is bigger, faster, stronger & super aggressive. If Mir can't stay away from this charging bull Lesner. It will be a First round TKO for Lesner!!

I firmly feel that Pierre will win it, however his contender wont make it an easy one!

1.Lesner wins "sets up a rubber match"
2.Alves will not make weight, if the fight happens it will not be for the belt and Alves might win 3rd TKO ...I just don't see him making weight ..I hope he does though should be a great fight..I love both Alves and GSP !
3. Hendo slaps the crybaby Bisping silly " unless Bisping runs the whole time !
4. I just see a boring fight could go split win for whoever!!
4.Fitch..He is a warrior !

Well, I'm going out on a limb here but my picks (if anyones interested) are
1 Lesnar
2 Alves
3 Hendo
4 Thiago
5 Akiyama
Brock is really psyched as is Alves and they both have heavy hands plus good takedown defense.
I know these words get thrown around way too much but Henderson really is a "living legend" and I just don't know why anyone would start up with him the way that Bisping did in TUF it shows a cetain amount of disrespect for the sport in general I think. Anyway Hendo is really motivated now to beat up on Bisping regardless of how it looks this is the fight that I believe people will be talking about long after it's over.
