Proving that a famous last name sells, Kim Couture earned an event-high $10,000 at Strikeforce: Challengers on Friday at the Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan.

Couture, the ex-wife of Randy Couture, was stopped by punches in the co-headliner to Kerry Vera, the wife of UFC fighter Brandon Vera. The women's fight came six days after the male counterparts fought at UFC 105.

Vera earned $4,000 to show and another $4,000 for her victory.

In the main event, Tyrone Woodley earned $3,500 to show and another $3,500 as a win bonus, while Rudy Bears won $2,500. Woodley submitted Bears with a triangle choke at 2:52 of the first round.

Couture was issued a 60-day suspension following the fight.

The four fighters in the co-headliners were the only salaries made available to FanHouse by the Kansas athletic commission.

Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson and interim champion Gilbert Melendez will look to unify the belts in a rematch on the Strikeforce: Evolution card on Dec. 19 in San Jose, Calif.

The fight has been rumored for quite some time, but the website of Melendez's Cesar Gracie camp has finally confirmed the bout. The rematch has already been twice promoted and canceled both times this year due to Thomson's ankle and leg injuries.

When the two enter the cage on Dec. 19, it will be a year and a half since Melendez (16-2) lost the title to Thomson (16-2) and Thomson's first title defense. Thomson fought once more in September, stopping Ashe Bowman in a non-title affair.

Following the title loss to Thomson, Melendez gained the interim title in his next fight in April 2009 over Rodrigo Damm and defended the belt in August while avenging a previous loss against Mitsuhiro Ishida.

After his UFC 106 victory over Anthony Johnson, Josh Koscheck proclaimed that he -- not Dan Hardy -- deserves to be the next contender to Georges St Pierre's title.

As you'll see in my rankings of the Top 10 welterweights in MMA, I think Koscheck is right -- sort of. I believe Koscheck deserves to be higher-ranked than Hardy, but I also think Hardy is more deserving of a shot at St. Pierre. The reason is simple: Koscheck has already had a fight with GSP, losing to him at UFC 74. Hardy hasn't gotten his chance yet.

So because I'd like to see GSP get a new challenge, I think Hardy is a fitting No. 1 contender, even though Hardy is just below Koscheck on the list below.

Watching Kerry Vera beat Kim Couture on Friday night, I was thinking about the current state of women's MMA and how hard it is to determine who the top fighters are.

Women's MMA is still in its infancy and it's nearly impossible to identify which fighters can really fight (like I think Vera can), which fighters are a step below (like I think Couture is) and which fighters really shouldn't even be in the cage (like I think would be a fair way to describe Couture's one-time opponent Lina Kvokov).

Strikeforce considers Tyron Woodley one of its best welterweight prospects, and Woodley won again on Friday night, defeating Rudy Bears at the Strikeforce Challengers event in Kansas City.

Woodley got a takedown less than a minute into the fight, and when he got to full mount on the ground it looked like he was close to finishing it. Bears did a nice job of getting back up and landing a kick on his feet, but then Woodley took Bears down again and forced him to tap with an arm triangle choke midway through the first round.

Woodley improves his record to 6-0, winning all six fights by submission. Bears falls to 10-4, with all four losses by submission.

Showtime announcer (and former UFC welterweight champion) Pat Miletich proclaimed Woodley "the best athlete in the sport" after the fight. That seems like an overstatement, but maybe not much of one: Woodley, a former NCAA wrestling All-American, is a dynamic, explosive fighter.

"I'm just going to keep training and keep getting better," Woodley said, adding that he likes how he'd match up with Strikeforce's best welterweight, Jake Shields. In reality, Woodley isn't ready for Shields yet. But he's a talented athlete with legitimate title aspirations.He's for real.

Kerry Vera handily defeated Kim Couture in the first round of their fight at Friday night's Strikeforce Challengers series event, showing off impressive kicks and bloodying Couture's face and knocking her to the ground with hard punches before the referee stopped the fight.

Couture used her left jab effectively in the early part of the fight, and she snapped Vera's head back a couple of times. But Vera, a former professional muay Thai fighter, is the more skilled, polished striker, and she won the fight convincingly, ending it at 3:35 of the first round.

"The first punch that she hit me with, I was like, 'ooh, wake up, time to go,' but I came back," Vera said after the fight.

The bout came just six days after Couture's ex-husband, Randy Couture, defeated Vera's husband, Brandon Vera, at UFC 105. That fight will get a lot more attention than this one, but Kerry Vera showed on Friday night that she's a fighter all MMA fans should pay attention to. She's a strong striker with a winning personality, and she'll be a big part of Strikeforce's continuing efforts to promote women's MMA. Beating Couture was a step forward for her, and in her next fight she'll need to take a step up in competition.

In 2007 and 2008, Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante was viewed as one of the most promising prospects in mixed martial arts, a light heavyweight with devastating striking and a killer instinct.

Feijao took a step backward in his first fight of 2009, losing to Mike Kyle, and in his return to the cage Friday night at the Strikeforce Challengers Series, he got off to a slow start. But we finally saw the Feijao we've been looking for in the second round, when he battered Aaron Rosa with a series of strikes and won by TKO.

Feijao spent most of the first round just holding Rosa against the fence and not doing much of anything, and at the end of the first round the crowd was booing, but in the second round Feijao turned it on and dominated Rosa, both on his feet and on the ground. It wasn't exactly a great performance from Feijao, but it was at least a sign of life.

Feijao improves his record to 8-2, with seven wins by knockout or TKO. Rosa falls to 12-3.

Two days ago, I don't think anyone had Jose Aldo listed as one of the top 10 pound-for-pound fighters in mixed martial arts. But after what Aldo did to Mike Brown on Wednesday night, I don't think there's any way to exclude him.

Aldo didn't just beat Brown to win the World Extreme Cagefighting featherweight title, he dominated him: Dominated someone who himself had dominated the featherweight division up until he ran into Aldo. So my new pound-for-pound rankings include a new name, and a name that I have a feeling we'll be seeing on pound-for-pound lists for a long, long time.

The star power of Randy Couture and an undercard full of Ultimate Fighter winners was enough to give UFC 105 on Spike more young male viewers than Strikeforce on CBS got a week earlier, Spike TV said Wednesday.

Spike said in a press release that UFC 105 topped Strikeforce in all the young demographics that advertisers covet, and that it blew Strikeforce away in the male 18-24 demographic.

Spike also said that its 994,000 18-to-34-year-old male viewers were the most of anything on television, broadcast or cable, on Saturday night, topping regular programming that included college football on several channels.

Spike didn't match the total viewers that CBS got with Strikeforce; almost 2 million more people watched Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers as watched Randy Couture vs. Brandon Vera. But Spike did show once again that the UFC is a juggernaut in attracting young men.

November has been an odd month for middleweights.

The UFC's middleweight division is basically taking the month off, with the undisputed No. 1 middleweight in the world, UFC champion Anderson Silva, nursing an elbow injury and hinting that he doesn't think any of the UFC's other top middleweights are worthy opponents.

Meanwhile, two big middleweight fights happened in other promotions, but they didn't quite go according to plan: Jake Shields beat Jason "Mayhem" Miller to win the Strikeforce middleweight title in a fight that left the crowd booing, while Mamed Khalidov shocked Sengoku middleweight champion Jorge Santiago.

And the guy who's probably the best middleweight after Silva -- Dan Henderson -- doesn't have a contract at the moment and isn't sure if he'll be fighting for the UFC or Strikeforce in 2010. So my list of the Top 10 middleweights in MMA shows a division in flux.

Jason "Mayhem" Miller and Jake Shields took to a rematch outside the cage and online through the social networking service Twitter late Sunday to rekindle their rivalry from their Nov. 7 Strikeforce middleweight title bout.

It all began when Miller posted, "Jake, the worst damage you did was give me staph, zit covered leg humper."

Shields, who captured the vacant belt by defeating Miller by unanimous decision after five rounds, responded an hour later with "You seem upset?," punctuating the taunt with a link to a photo of himself posing next to a bookshelf filled with championship belts.

"Hugged your way to all those? Let's do it again, I'll hold on after the bell this time," Miller wrote back.

Shields took a cheap shot next at Miller, who was arrested in December 2005 for allegedly breaking into his ex-girlfriend's home and attacking her male friend. Miller was later found not guilty on charges of assault and burglary.

"I'm on to bigger & better fights like always. I mean ur last real win was when you beat up your girlfriend and got arrested," said Shields.

Miller closed the exchange of jabs with "you're just scared of a rematch, just say it. Or your daddy will say it. B---h."

On a more positive note, Shields commented on Georges St-Pierre namedropping him over the weekend as a dream opponent.

"Just heard GSP listed me as his dream fight," Shields wrote. "HUGE honor 2 be able 2 challenge myself against 1 of the most dominant champs ever someday."

We all know that Penn, the UFC champion, has established himself as the top lightweight in the sport. But after Penn, there are about a dozen guys who are practically interchangeable. That list includes UFC fighters like Penn's next opponent (Diego Sanchez), his last opponent (Kenny Florian), and some past and future UFC opponents like Gray Maynard, Frank Edgar and Sean Sherk.
And the list of lightweights who could make a case for being at or near No. 2 in the lightweight division also includes Dream champion Shinya Aoki, Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez, Sengoku champion Mizuto Hirota and Strikeforce champion Josh Thomson. Fedor Emelianenko demonstrated once again last weekend that he is the best heavyweight in mixed martial arts, beating a game Brett Rogers by second-round TKO on CBS.

Meanwhile, the UFC's heavyweight division is reeling: Champion Brock Lesnar is battling a serious illness, No. 1 contender Shane Carwin is recovering from a knee injury, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is suffering from staph infection. So while the UFC still has most of the Top 10 heavyweights in MMA, Dana White can't feel great about the heavyweight division right now.

On this week's edition of The MMA Hour, we were first joined by the UFC's UK division president Marshall Zelaznik to talk about the organization's return to England for UFC 105 this Saturday night. Zelaznik discussed the UFC's expansion overseas, how many events will take place in Europe in 2010, and having Randy Couture fight in England for the first time.

Later in the show we were joined by the winner of ninth season of The Ultimate Fighter, Ross Pearson, who faces Aaron Riley at UFC 105. Pearson talked about leaving his job as a bricklayer to become a full-time MMA fighter and fighting inside the Octagon in front of his fellow countrymen for the first time. MDS and I also looked back to the Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers and looked ahead to Saturday night's event. Watch/listen to the show below.

Dismissing reports that he suffered a broken nose and a serious hand injury in beating Brett Rogers on Saturday, Fedor Emelianenko said in an interview this week that neither injury was serious and he'll be back soon.

Speaking to Loretta Hunt of Sherdog.com, Fedor said he didn't break his nose and that his hand injury is much less serious than has been reported, and that he won't be out four to six months as was feared. Video below.



"No, I didn't break my nose -- rather, Brett Rogers didn't break my nose," Fedor said. "It was just a blow that actually opened up an existing cut that I had for a while. When I was training for the Josh Barnett fight, my brother Aleksander came to Russia to train and spar with me, and he ... made a cut on the bridge of my nose. It was there for a while and then in the fight Brett connected and it re-opened. ... The nose is fine."

Fedor said he dislocated his left thumb when punching Rogers in the first round, but that it will only be in a cast for four to six weeks and that it's not a significant injury.

"I'll get back into training, actually, fairly quickly," he said. "I can run and I can work with my right hand, I just can't do any striking with my left hand."

Hunt asked Fedor about UFC President Dana White's claims that the elite heavyweights in the UFC would easily beat Rogers, but Fedor shrugged it off.

"What can I tell you?" Fedor said. "The first thing I saw was that Brett Rogers had his way very quickly -- in 20 seconds -- with a UFC champion, Andrei Arlovski. In terms of Rogers, I can't comment on how other fighters in the UFC would fare with Brett Rogers because that's just speculation. As far as the UFC, if they offer us a fair deal, then we would be open to fighting in the UFC."

M-1 Global CEO Joost Raimond said Fedor will be back with Strikeforce "100 percent, for sure," for "a minimum of two" co-promotions with M-1 Global.

Last week, EA Sports announced that legendary MMA referee, "Big" John McCarthy, would be featured in their upcoming EA MMA video, which is slated to hit stores in 2010. FanHouse attended the press conference in Hoffman Estates, Ill., to announce McCarthy's involvement in the game (as well as Muhammed Lawal, Jake Shields and Brett Rogers) and details about the game itself.

Below is a video interview with McCarthy talking about being a part of EA MMA, his relationship with UFC president Dana White, and the current state of refereeing and judging in the sport.

CBS has released for free viewing the entire broadcast of this past Saturday's Saturday Night Fights featuring the heavyweight contest between Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers at the Sears Centre near Chicago, Ill.

The main card was rounded out by Jake Shields vs. Jason "Mayhem" Miller, Gegard Mousasi vs. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and Fabricio Werdum vs. Antonio Silva.

The final Nielsen ratings are in and 5.46 million viewers tuned in Saturday to watch Strikeforce and M-1 Global's main event between Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers from 11PM to 11:15PM ET on CBS, FanHouse has learned.

The numbers for the entire Saturday Night Fights broadcast, which included Jake Shields vs. Jason "Mayhem" Miller, Gegard Mousasi vs. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and Fabricio Werdum vs. Antonio Silva, earned the network a 2.5 rating for 4.042 million viewers from 9PM to 11:24PM ET.

While CBS still fell short to Fox and ABC, the channel was a big winner in the 18-34 demographic. Saturday Night Fights was the top program for both adults and men 18-34, beating out college football and was an improvement of 283% on CBS' season-to-date average on Saturday nights.
