Gina Carano Grapples With Kim Couture

Some training footage of Gina Carano and Kim Couture working on their ground game together at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas:

Carano and Couture are two of the best-known women in mixed martial arts, with Carano serving as the public face of women's MMA because of the way EliteXC has promoted her, and Couture well known because of her husband, Randy.

In reality, they're not the best two women in the sport. I think Carano will lose when and if EliteXC matches her up with Cris Cyborg, and Couture is a novice. But it's still cool to get a look at them going one-on-one.

Tito Ortiz No Longer in UFC, but 'The Best Fights of My Career Are Still Ahead of Me'

Tito Ortiz is on tonight's edition of Inside MMA, and even though he's left the UFC and hasn't signed on with any other organization, he suggested that he plans to get back into the cage and have plenty more fights:

"The first time I'm a free agent in 11 years," Ortiz said. "It's an opportunity I've got to get some of the biggest fights of my career, still ahead of me. I'm only 33 years old. Randy Couture started his career at 33, so the sky's the limit for me. ... I still look forward for the next few years to have some powerful fights."

I like Tito and would like to see him fight again, but I most certainly do not believe that the best fights of his career are ahead of him. He'll turn 34 in January, and he hasn't won a fight since 2006. He's still a big name and an interesting personality, but he's no longer a great fighter.

Can WEC Pull Off a Pay-Per-View?

WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres told me last week that he expects to fight WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber some day:

I wondered at the time whether a Torres-Faber fight would be on pay-per-view, and there are now indications that it would be. Kevin Iole of Yahoo reports that WEC is heading toward pay-per-view, perhaps as early as May. The single biggest fight that WEC could put together would be Torres vs. Faber.

EliteXC Tries to Humanize Kimbo Slice

It's an interesting marketing tactic that as Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson prepares to step in the cage again, he's appearing in videos like this one:

Kimbo talks about how he wanted to be a football player until Hurricane Andrew ruined his senior year in high school, and how fighting was the way he re-built his life. It's an effort to humanize Kimbo, and although it's not the move I would have expected from EliteXC, I like it.

Kenny Florian Talks Joe Stevenson at UFC 91, Says B.J. Penn Fight 'On the Horizon'

I think the UFC's top lightweight contender, Kenny Florian, is getting a bit of a raw deal right now, as he won't be getting a title show any time soon because lightweight champ B.J. Penn is moving up in weight class to fight Georges St. Pierre at welterweight. But Florian said on today's MMA Live that he doesn't mind having to beat Joe Stevenson at UFC 91 before he gets a title shot:

"It's great for me to stay busy and fight good opponents, especially when you have somebody like B.J. Penn on the horizon," Florian said. "I don't think I'm being dissed in any way. The key is to stay busy, to fight great opponents. ... My concern right now is Joe Stevenson."

MTV Live, Daryn Jones Make Fun of Bas Rutten Video, but Bas Gets the Last Laugh

We've previously noted the hilarious video that mixed martial arts legend Bas Rutten made in which he teaches people how to fight. Now the video has crossed over into the mainstream enough that MTV Live has spoofed it:

Pretty funny, but even funnier is Rutten's reaction to being spoofed, after the jump.

Cris Cyborg-Yoko Takahashi Not Set for CBS, EliteXC Puts Fight on Undercard

I've previously written that I like the idea of having two women's fights on the October 4 EliteXC CBS show, but apparently that's not going to happen. Although the Gina Carano-Kelly Kobold fight will be one of the four featured in prime time network television, Five Ounces of Pain is reporting that the other women's fight, Cris Cyborg vs. Yoko Takahashi, is likely to be on the non-televised undercard. For those who don't know her, here's a look at Takahashi in action:

I like how she starts her fight by getting into a three-point stance and charging at her opponent, but with a 13-9 record, I just don't think Takahashi is good enough to challenge Cyborg, so maybe it's just as well that the fight won't be on CBS.

Mayor Of 2012 Host City (Sort Of) Backs Olympic Mixed Martial Arts

We previously noted that London Mayor Boris Johnson made some bizarre comments about ping pong in his speech at the party where London officially took the mantle from Beijing as Summer Olympics host city. But there was another part of the speech, about 2:20 in, when Johnson said something of interest to those of us who would like to see mixed martial arts in the Olympics:

"I mourn the passing of some of the sports," Johnson said of the way the Olympics have changed. "For instance the Pankration."

Pankration was a sport in the Ancient Olympics that combined both boxing and wrestling, and it's a sort of forerunner to MMA. Since Johnson mourns its passing, I would suggest that he should propose to the International Olympic Committee that it make MMA an Olympic sport.

WEC 36 Video: Jens Pulver-Leonard Garcia

While EliteXC tells fans they need to do their own YouTube research, World Extreme Cagefighting continues to do a solid job using YouTube to promote its upcoming WEC 36 show. Here are highlights of Jens Pulver and Leonard Garcia, who will fight in a featherweight battle on the undercard:

Pulver is coming off a loss to Urijah Faber, and although Pulver got crushed, the mere fact that he went five rounds with Faber -- who entered the fight having won 12 straight in either the first or second round -- is impressive. Pulver is a former UFC lightweight champ and one of the best in history at the featherweight class, even if he's a little past his prime at age 33.

Garcia is best known to MMA fans for his decision loss to Roger Huerta at UFC 69 last year. That fight was at lightweight; like Pulver, Garcia is better suited to featherweight. WEC 36 takes place September 10 on Versus. This should be a good one.

EliteXC Tells MMA Fans: If You Don't Know Kelly Kobold, Get on YouTube

Kelly Kobold will fight Gina Carano in the next EliteXC CBS show on October 4, and EliteXC Vice President Jared Shaw tells Fight Hype, "Anybody that doesn't know Kelly Kobold needs to get on YouTube." As you wish, Jared:

That was Kobold defeating Adrienna Jenkins via a first-round submission last year.

Kobold has an impressive 16-2-1 record and has some impressive highlights on YouTube, although she has lost her last two fights. However, shouldn't EliteXC and CBS be doing more than just telling fans to go to YouTube to promote the Kobold-Carano fight? I didn't think EliteXC and CBS did enough to promote their last show, and the early indications are that they have a lot of work to do to promote their next show, too.

After the jump, an interview with Kobold.
